Natural Selection

| Variation | Differences in traits among individuals in a population. |
| Mutations | Random changes in DNA that can create new traits. |
| Sexual Reproduction | A process where two parents combine genetic material to create offspring with unique traits. |
| Adaptation | A trait that helps an organism survive and reproduce in its environment. |
| Differential Survival | When some individuals survive better than others because of their traits. |
| Selective Advantage | A trait that gives an organism a better chance of surviving and reproducing. |
| Natural Selection | The process where organisms with helpful traits survive and reproduce more, passing those traits on. |
| Evolution | A change in a species’ traits over many generations due to natural selection. |
| Environment | The surroundings and conditions in which an organism lives. |
| Overproduction | When organisms produce more offspring than can survive. |
| Competition | Organisms fighting for limited resources such as food, mates, or space. |
| Fitness | An organism’s ability to survive and reproduce in its environment. |
| Heritable | The ability for a trait to be passed from parent to offspring |
