TermDefinition
contact digestion Contact digestion is the final step of digestion where enzymes on the surface of the small intestine break food down when it touches the intestinal wall.
bilirubin Bilirubin is a yellow waste product made when red blood cells break down. The liver processes it and helps remove it from the body through bile.
bile Bile is a digestive fluid made by the liver and stored in the gallbladder. It helps break down fats in the small intestine.
acidosis Acidosis is a condition where the body’s fluids become too acidic, meaning the pH drops below the normal range.
alkaline Alkaline means having a pH above 7, or being more basic than acidic.
PH pH is a scale that measures how acidic or basic something is, ranging from 0 (most acidic) to 14 (most alkaline).
alveolus An alveolus is a tiny air sac in the lungs where oxygen enters the blood and carbon dioxide leaves the blood.
laryngopharynx The laryngopharynx is the lower part of the throat where food and air pass before going to the esophagus or the larynx.
alveolar duct An alveolar duct is a small airway in the lungs that leads directly to the alveolar sacs, where gas exchange happens.
epiglottis The epiglottis is a small flap of tissue that covers the windpipe when you swallow so food doesn’t go into your lungs.
