Where does the value of a statistical life come from? wage studies, as there is a wage premium for dangerous jobs
What is the downside of creating a league table, applying the value of statistical life differences by occupation and industry, ambiguity of the effect of age, publication biases, based on earning does not account for leisure time/utility loss
What do experts measure instead of VSL? Quality Adjusted Life YEars (QALY), measures both the quantity and the quality of life lived
What is the goal of using QALYs? measure how well all different kinds of medical treatments lengthen and/or improve patients' lives
What is the standard gamble method? respondents asked to choose between remaining in a state of ill health OR medical intervention
How is Time Trade-Off used to infer relative preferencs? look at lecture
how does paired comparisons used to infer relative preferencs? choose the preferred health state, assuming the same duration. analysts estimate a choice model with dimension-levels as attributess, recover coefficients that reflect the relative disutility of moving from "no problems" to worse levels
How does QALYs discriminate against people in poor health? extending the lives of individuals with underlying health conditions gains fewr QALYs
How are older patients negatively affected by QALYs? older patients with shorter life expectancy will not be able to gain as many QALYs from treatments as younger patients
