Unit 3 vocabulary flash cards

TermDefinition
Subconscious n. Mental activity that occurs without someone's being aware of it; Conscious is the opposite of subconscious.
Suspicion n. A feeling of doubt or mistrust; I had a growing suspicion that my parents were hiding something.
Despised v. Hated; Scorned; I despised my brother until I learned why he acted the way he did.
Deterioration n. The process of becoming worse; Old people experience rapid cognitive deterioration.
Introspective adj. Thoughtful; inward looking; I enjoy being around introspective people
Regression n. The return to a previous, less advanced state; Sometimes the economy goes through a large recession.
Competence n. The ability to do something successfully or efficiently; Many people start to lose their competence as they grow old.
Stagnate v. Cease developing; become inactive or dull; Water will stagnate if you leave it still for a long time.
Conduits n. Channels for conveying water or other fluid; Some people just came to my house to install new conduits.
Toil v. work extremely hard or incessantly. (can be a noun) After many years of toil, I finally was able to reach my goal.
Strife n. Angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues; conflict; Strife can be a cause of civil war.
Blithe adj. Happy or joyous; Criminals break the law in blithe disregard of the rules.
Sages n. Profoundly wise men, especially ones who feature in ancient history or legend; I went to visit the sages.
Lore n. A body of traditions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group, typically passed from person to person by word of mouth; I enjoy learning ancient lore.
Meddling participle/adj. Interfere in or busy oneself unduly with something that is not one's concern; Stop meddling in my personal business
Barren adj. Showing no results or achievements; unproductive; The land was barren and dry.
Active voice n. The form a transitive verb takes when it expresses an action done by its subject; Passive voice is the opposite of active voice.
Contribute v. To add or to give something to help support a specific idea or reach a common purpose; You should contribute to my orchestra fundraiser.
Imply v. To strongly suggest something that is not expressly stated; I tried to imply that, but you wouldn't listen.
Reinforce v. To strengthen or support an idea, usually with additional material; It is important to regularly reinforce what you have recentlylearned.
Alliteration n. When the same sound or letters appear at the beginning of words in a sentence/phrase; Excited Eric eats eggs.
Allusion n. A figure of speech in which a writer makes a reference to a famous story, person, object, or event; You're a regular Einstein.
Hyperbole n. An exaggeration to drive in a point; I am so hungry, I could eat a horse.
Metaphor n. Compares two things that are not alike without using like or as; You are my sunshine.
Personification n. Gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas; The leaves danced in the wind.
Simile n. Compares two things that are not alike using like or as; You eat like a pig.
Stanza n. A group of lines in a poem, often separated by spaces; Some poems have only 1 stanza.
Imagery n. Language that appeals to the senses to help the reader image a text or to experience an event like the author; Imagery can make a story more interesting.
Symbolism n. Using objects, characters, actions, events, etc. to represent or signify something more profound or abstract than its literal existence. Many flags have a lot of symbolism.
Suspense when the reader experiences uncertainty about how the plot will progress or what a character’s motivation is; Sometimes a story will have so much suspense that you just can't stop reading.
Foreshadowing a literary device where the author or speaker provides hints to later events/things that will happen in a narrative; Foreshadowing is sometimes annoying.
Prefix Sub-/Sus- Under, below; Submarine; Existing, occurring, or used under the surface of the sea; The ocean has large submarine volcanoes.
Suffix -tion Turns a verb into the act of that verb; Preparation; The action or process of making ready or being made ready for use or consideration; Sending someone to Mars will take lots of preparation
