TermDefinition
Pituitary Gland This is also called hypophysis cerebri, is a small but mighty structure. It measures only 1.2 to 1.5 cm across. This is crucial for the functions of the anterior lobe that in the past centuries it was referred to as the "master gland".
Adenohypophysis This is the anterior portion of the pituitary gland, is divided into two parts- the pars anterior and pars intermedia.
Synapse This is the place where signals are transmitted from one neuron, called the presynaptic neuron, to another neuron, called postsynaptic neuron.
Amine These are neurotransmitters that are synthesized from amino acid molecules, such as tyrosine, trytophan, or histidine.
Epidural Space This is immediate outside the dura mater but inside the body coverings of the spinal cord. Supporting cushion of fat and other connective tissues.
Cerebellum This is called the "little brain" which is located just below the posterior portion of the cerebrum and is partially covered by it.
Thalamus A dumbbell-shaped mass of gray matter made up of many nuclei.
Myotome This is a skeletal muscle or group that receives motor axons from a given spinal nerve.
Olfactory nerves These are composed of axons of neurons whose dendrites and cell bodies lie in the nasal mucosa, high up along the septum and superior conchae.
Olfaction This is our sense of smell. It helps us interpret our environment by detecting molecules called odorants given off by organisms and substances around us.
