ELA Flashcards Unit 3 Vocabulary Words

TermDefinition
Simile Her smile was as bright as the sun n. Compares two things that are not alike using like or as.
Metaphor The classroom was a zoo. n. Compares two things that are not alike without using like or as.
Hyperbole It felt like it took a million years to finish the assignment n. An exaggeration to drive in a point.
Personification The wind whispered through the forests through the trees. n. Gives human characteristics to inanimate objects, animals, or ideas.
Allusion The test question contained an allusion to Greek mythology n. A figure of speech in which a writer makes a reference to a famous story, person, object, or event
Alliteration Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers n. When the same sound or letters appear at the beginning of words in a sentence/phrase.
Active Voice The student wrote the essay in the active voice to making it good n. the form of a transitive verb takes when it expresses an action done by it's subject. (subject+ verb + object)
Contribute Everyone should contribute to the group project. v. to add or give something to help support a specific idea or research a common purpose.
Imply Her silence seemed to imply that she was unhappy. v. To strongly suggest something that is not expressly stated.
Reinforce The coach used positive feedback to reinforce the team v. To strengthen or support an idea usually with additional material
Stanza The poem had three stanzas, each with four lines. n. A group of lines in a poem often separated by by spaces. (The "paragraph" of a poem.)
Imagery The book used vivid imagery to describe the stormy sea n. Language that appeals to the senses (see, smell, taste) to help the reader image a text or experience the event like the author.
Symbolism The white dove is a common example of symbolism for peace. n. Using objects, characters, actions, events, to represent or signify something more profound than it's literal existence
Suspense The author built suspense by leaving the chapter on a cliffhanger. n. When the reader experiences uncertainty about how the plot will progress or what a character's motivation is.
Foreshadowing The early dark clouds were a clear instance of foreshadowing. n. A literary device where the author or speaker provides hints to later events/things that will happen in a narrative.
Subconscious Dreams are a reflection of a person's subconscious thoughts n. Mental activity that occurs without someone being aware of it.
Suspicion There was a growing suspicion that the data had been shared. n. Feeling of doubt or mistrust
Despised The villain in the story was universally despised v. Hated ; scorned
Deterioration There was a rapid deterioration of ancient scrolls. n. Process of becoming worse
Introspective After the failure, the team became more introspective adj. Thoughtful ; inward-looking
Regression The patient's sudden regression in language skills was worrisome n. Return to a previous less advanced state
Competence Her competence in handling complex negotiations was great n. The ability to do something successfully or efficiently
Stagnate Without new ideas, the project will stagnate and fail to progress. v. Cease developing; become inactive or dull
Conduits The old pipes served as conduits for water under the streets. n. Channels for conveying water or other fluids
Toil After years of toil, the farmers achieved a successful harvest. v. Work extremely hard or incessantly
Strife The political strife in the region led to widespread instability. n. Angry or bitter disagreement over fundamental issues; conflict
Blithe He remained blithe and unaware of the serious trouble adj. Happy or joyous
Sages The ancient sages offered wisdom and guidance n. Profoundly wise men especially ones who feature in ancient history or legend
Lore The local lore spoke of a hidden treasure buried n. A body of transitions and knowledge on a subject or held by a particular group. Typically passed by word of mouth.
Meddling Constant meddling by the neighbors caused conflict participle adj. Interfere in or busy oneself with something that is not one's concern.
Barren he once fertile land became barren after years of drought. adj. Showing no results or achievements ; unproductive
Latin Prefix (Suspense) There was a growing suspicion that the data had been shared. n. When the reader experiences uncertainty about how the plot will progress or what a character's motivation is.
