a- = without men/o = menstruation -rrhea = flow, discharge absence of menstruation or menarche
ante- = before, in front of -partum = birth, labor the period of pregnancy that occurs before labor begins
a- = not, without zo/o = animal, animal life sperm/o = sperm -ia = condition a condition of the absence of sperm in semen
prostat/o = prostate gland -ic = pertaining to hyper- = excessive, above -plasia = growth, formation a disorder in which the prostate becomes enlarged and causes problems with urination and/or empty- ing the bladder
cervic/o = cervix, neck -al = pertaining to cancer of the uterine cervix
crypt/o = hidden orchid/o = testis -ism = state of, condition a condition in which a testicle or testicles have not moved down into the scrotum; also called unde- scended testicle(s)
dys- = abnormal, painful, difficult men/o = menstruation -rrhea = flow, discharge pain and discomfort during menstruation
ec- = outside, beyond top/o = place -ic = pertaining to a pregnancy in which the fertilized egg implants in the fallopian tube or in another location outside the uterus
endo- = within, inside metri/o = uterus -al = pertaining to cancer of the endometrial tissue (the lining of the uterus)
endo- = within, inside metri/o = uterus -osis = abnormal condition a condition that causes endometrial tissue to grow on the outer surface of the uterus
epididym/o = epididymis -itis = inflammation inflammation of the epididymis, usually caused by infection
genit/o = reproduction, genital -al = pertaining to an incurable type of sexually transmitted infection that is caused by herpes simplex viruses type 1 (HSV-1) or type 2 (HSV-2)
genit/o = reproduction, genital -al = pertaining to a sexually transmitted infection caused by human papillomavirus; also called HPV
gynec/o = female -logist = one who studies a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats condi- tions of the female reproductive system
gynec/o = female -logy = study of the medical specialty related to the diagnosis and treatment of female reproductive system conditions
hydr/o = water -cele = protrusion a condition in which fluid accumulates in the mem- brane around the testes
intra- = within -partum = birth, labor the period of time during childbirth
men/o = menstruation -pause = cessation, stopping the end of menstruation; occurs when a woman has not had a menstrual period for 12 months
men/o = menstruation -rrhagia = abnormal flow condition of excessive menstrual flow
metr/o = uterus -rrhagia = abnormal flow abnormal uterine bleeding, especially between regu- lar menstrual periods
obstetr/o = birth -ician = specialist a medical doctor who specializes in care related to pregnancy and childbirth; also called OB
obstetr/o = birth -ics = noun form of pertain- ing to the medical specialty related to pregnancy and childbirth
olig/o = small, scant men/o = menstruation -rrhea = flow, discharge infrequent or scanty (small amount of) menstrual flow
olig/o = small, scant sperm/o = sperm -ia = condition a condition in which the number of sperm cells in semen is low; also called low sperm count
ovari/o = ovary -an = pertaining to cancer of one or both ovaries
ovari/o = ovary -an = pertaining to cyst a fluid-filled cyst in the ovary
poly- = many cyst/o = sac, pouch -ic = pertaining to a hormone-related condition that may cause irregu- lar menstrual periods, ovarian cysts, and infertility; also called PCOS
post- = after, behind -partum = birth, labor depression experienced after the birth of a child
testicul/o = testis -ar = pertaining to cancer of one or both testicles
testicul/o = testis -ar = pertaining to a condition in which a testicle twists on the sper- matic cord, reducing blood supply
ur/o = urine -logist = one who studies a medical doctor who diagnoses and treats condi- tions of the urinary system and the male reproduc- tive system
uter/o = uterus -ine = pertaining to cancer of the uterus; usually involves the endome- trial tissue
uter/o = uterus -ine = pertaining to fibr/o = fibers -oid = resembling benign (noncancerous) growth that occurs in or on the uterus; also called uterine leiomyoma
vagin/o = vagina -itis = inflammation inflammation of the vagina that may be caused by bacteria, protozoa, or fungi
amni/o = amnion -centesis = surgical puncturing the insertion of a needle through the abdomen to collect a specimen of amniotic fluid to test for chromosomal and other disorders
cervic/o = cervix, neck -al = pertaining to bi/o = life -opsy = visual inspection a biopsy of the cervix; often performed if abnormal cells are found during a Pap test
chorion/o = the outer fetal membrane -ic = pertaining to testing that may be performed during pregnancy to detect chromosomal disorders; involves taking and analyzing a sample from the placenta; also called chorionic villi sampling
colp/o = vagina -scopy = process of visually examining a procedure in which an instrument with a light and viewing lens is used to examine the vagina and cervix
