glomerulus compact cluster, particularly when referring to the tuft of capillaries forming part of the nephron
mesangial cells irregular cell that functions as a support and phagocytic cell; unique to renal corpuscles
Henle loop extension of the proximal tubule of the nephron; also called loop of Henle or nephron loop
juxtaglomerular cells cell of the juxtaglomerular apparatus
macula densa tubule cells in the juxtaglomerular apparatus that are dense and tightly packed
peritubular capillaries capillaries around the tubules in the kidney
vasa recta the long, hairpin-shaped arterioles of the kidney leading from the efferent arteriole and following the nephron loop; also called straight arterioles (of kidney)
juxtamedullary nephrons type of nephron that lies near the junction of the cortical and medullary layers of the kidney; also called long-loop nephron
renal clearance amount of blood plasma cleared of a particular substance by the kidneys per minute
glomerular filtration rate watery fluid filtered from the plasma of renal blood capillaries into the glomerular capsule of the glomerulus
