Blood transfusion Transfer of blood or blood components from donor to recipient
Bone marrow transplant Replacement of diseased bone marrow with healthy donor cells
Cardioversion Electrical shock used to restore a normal heart rhythm
Coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) Surgical bypass around a blocked coronary artery
Defibrillation Electrical current or device used to stop fibrillation and restore normal rhythm
Endarterectomy Surgical removal of plaque from the inside of an artery
Heart transplantation Placement of a healthy donor heart into a patient
Pacemaker Implanted device that controls abnormal heart rhythms
Percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty (PTCA) Balloon procedure used to open clogged coronary arteries, often with a stent
Angiotensin-converting (ACE) inhibitor Prevents vessels from narrowing to help lower blood pressure
Antianginal Prevents or relieves chest pain (angina)
Antiarrhythmic Prevents or treats irregular heartbeats
Anticoagulant Prevents formation of blood clots (“blood thinner”)
Antihypertensive Lowers high blood pressure
Beta blocker Treats angina, hypertension, and abnormal heart rhythms
Calcium channel blocker Widens arteries and lowers blood pressure
Diuretic Reduces excess fluid in the body
Hypolipidemic Lowers fat (lipid) levels in the blood
Thrombolytic Dissolves existing blood clots
Vasoconstrictor Narrows blood vessels, raising blood pressure
Vasodilator Widens blood vessels, lowering blood pressure
