| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Define the classical system. | Is based on the Latin names for metals that form more than one ion. Does not indicate the charge on the ion, just the relative magnitude of the charge. |
| What is the Latin name of Copper? And Ion/Lower & Ion/Higher? | Cuprum Cu^+ Cuproud Cu^2+ Cupric |
| What is the Latin name of Gold? And Ion/Lower & Ion/Higher? | Aurun Au^+ Aurous Au^3+ Auric |
| What is the Latin name of Iron? And Ion/Lower & Ion/Higher? | Ferrum Fe^2+ Ferrous Fe^3+ Ferric |
| What is the Latin name of Lead? And Ion/Lower & Ion/Higher? | Plumbum Pb^2+ Plumbous Pb^4+ Plumbic |
| What is the Latin name of Tin? And Ion/Lower & Ion/Higher? | Stannum Sn^2+ Stannous Sn^4+ Stannic |
| How do you name binary covalent compounds? | 1) Make sure there are 2 nonmetals. 2) The name needs to identify the elements in the molecule and the number of each. 3) Use prefixes except if there is only 1 of the first element. |
| Define Hydrates. | Compound that contains water of hydration which is water contained in a crystal. Formula in a hydrate has the formula of the ionic compound and a dot connecting it to the number of water molecules. |
| How do you name hydrates? | You had the Greek prefixes to the word hydrate to show the number of water molecules. |
| Define acids? | Is a compound that contains one or more hydrogen atoms and produces hydrogen ions (H^+) when dissolved in water. Acids will start with H. |
| What is naming acid rule 1? | When the name of an anion (x) ends in -ide, the acid begins with hydro-, the stem of the anion has the suffix -ic and is followed by the word acid. |
| What is naming acid rule 2? | When the anion name ends in -ite, the acid name is the stem of the anion with suffix -ous, followed by the word acid. (Polytomic acids) |
| What is naming acid rule 3? | When the anion name ends in -ate, the acid name is the stem of the anion with the suffix -ic followed by the word acid. |
| How do you write formulas for acids? | Use the rules for writing the names of acids in reverse to write the formulas for acids. (Polytomic ions) |
| For phosphorus acid what rule do you use? | Rule 2 |
| For sulfuric acid what rule do you use? | Rule 3 |
| How do you write names and formulas of bases? | A base is an ionic compound that produces hydroxide ions when dissolved in water (OH-). Bases are named by the name of the cation followed by the name of the anion. |
