What is a nerve impulse? A rapid electrical signal that travels along the axon of a neuron to transmit information.
What role do neurotransmitters play in nerve signaling? They are chemical messengers released from neurons that bind to receptors on target cells to pass along signals.
What are the two major divisions of the nervous system? The Central Nervous System (CNS) and the Peripheral Nervous System (PNS).
What structures make up the CNS? The brain and spinal cord.
What is the function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)? It controls involuntary functions like smooth muscle, cardiac muscle, and glands to maintain homeostasis.
How do the nervous and endocrine systems differ in communication speed? The nervous system responds quickly using electrical impulses; the endocrine system responds more slowly using hormones.
What is the main function of the heart and circulatory system? To pump oxygen-rich blood throughout the body and remove waste products.
What is lymph? Interstitial fluid that enters the lymphatic system to be filtered and returned to the bloodstream.
What is the primary function of the respiratory system? To exchange gases—bringing in oxygen and removing carbon dioxide to maintain homeostasis.
What is the main purpose of the digestive system? To break down food and absorb essential nutrients so they can be delivered to body cells.
