Respiratory

QuestionAnswer
Cellular respiration The process in the cells that uses oxygen and nutrients to create energy, producing carbon dioxide and water as byproducts.
Nose The main entrance for air; warms, humidifies, and filters incoming air using mucous membranes and cilia.
Pharynx A muscular tube shared by the respiratory and digestive systems; divided into the nasopharynx, oropharynx, and laryngopharynx.
Epiglottis A cartilage flap that covers the larynx during swallowing to prevent food from entering the airway.
Trachea A tube made of C-shaped cartilage rings that keep the airway open; lined with cilia and mucus to trap debris.
Alveoli Microscopic air sacs with simple squamous epithelium where gas exchange occurs between air and blood.
Lungs Organ pair occupying the thoracic cavity; the right lung has 3 lobes, the left has 2 lobes.
Surfactant A lipid-protein substance produced by type II alveolar cells that reduces surface tension and prevents alveolar collapse.
Inspiration (Inhalation) Active process using the diaphragm and external intercostals to expand the thorax and pull air in.
Expiration (Exhalation) Normally passive; occurs when the diaphragm relaxes and the thorax recoils.
