| Matter | Anything that has mass and takes up space; anything you can see, touch, taste, and smell |
| Democritus | Greek philosopher who thought the universe was made of empty space and tiny bits of stuff |
| Lavoisier | French chemist who showed how matter changes. |
| Law of conservation of matter | States that matter is not created or destroyed — it only changed form |
| Dalton | Believed that matter was made of atoms that were too small to see |
| JJ Thompson | Used a cathode ray tube (sealed on both ends with metal plates at each end, anode; positive, cathode; negative) |
| Electrons | Negatively charged particles |
| Ernest Rutherford | Used gold foil and bombarded it with alpha particles |
| Nucleus | Positively charged central part of the atom |
| Protons | Positive charged particles. |
| Neutrons | Uncharged particles |
| Niels Bohr | Found that electrons are arranged in energy levels |
| Electron cloud | It’s a spherical cloud of varying density |
| 6 quarks | Up, down, strange, charmed, top, and bottom (UDSCTB) |
| Dmitri Medeleev | Made the Periodic Table |
| Atomic Number | The number of protons found in the Nucleus of an atom, or the number of electrons surrounding the nucleus of an atom. |
| Element | A substance composed of a single kind of atom (cannot be broken down into another substance by chemical or physical means.) |
| Compound | A substance in which two or more different elements are CHEMICALLY bonded together. |
| Mixture | Two or more substances that are mixed together but are NOT chemically bonded. |
