Forces #2
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| 1st Law of Motion | known as the “law of inertia”; states that an object at rest will remain at rest and an object in motion will continue moving in a straight line at a constant speed until an outside force acts on it |
| 2nd Law of Motion | known as “the law of acceleration”; states that an object’s acceleration depends on the size and direction of the force acting on it and on the mass of the object. |
| 3rd Law of Motion | known as “action/reaction”; states that for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction |
| acceleration - | any change in velocity |
| deceleration | a change in velocity that is slowing down |
| speed | a measure of the distance an object moves in a given amount of time |
| velocity | an object’s speed in a particular direction; ex: traveling south at 55mph |
| potential energy | the energy an object has because of its place or condition |
| kinetic energy | the energy of motion, or energy in use |
| energy | the ability to cause changes in matter; ex: potential, kinetic, thermal, electrical, chemical, nuclear, etc |
