| control tower | the place at an airport where controllers can see the runways and manage takeoffs/landings |
| radio communication | transmitting information using radio waves; used by pilots and early controllers |
| radar | technology that uses radio waves to detect the location and speed of objects |
| antenna | equipment that sends out and receives radio waves |
| receiver | device that collects returning radio waves |
| controller | a person who manages and directs airplane movement via radio. |
| airspace | the region of the sky controlled or monitored by a specific facility |
| TRACON | facility that manages departures and arrivals near airports (surface to ~14,000 ft) |
| ARTCC | facility that manages aircraft at high cruising altitudes between airports |
| airspace | the region of the sky controlled or monitored by a specific facility |
| local controller | controller responsible for runway takeoffs and landings |
| ground control | controller in charge of planes moving on the taxiways and ramps |
