Origins of Islam

| Hijrah | – The trip Muhammad took when he left Mecca and moved to Medina. |
| Arid | – A dry place with very little rain, like a desert. |
| Monotheism | – Believing in only one god. |
| Pilgrimage | – A special trip someone takes to a holy or religious place. |
| Qur’an | – The holy book of Islam. |
| Allah | – The word for God in Arabic. |
| Polytheism | – Believing in many gods. |
| Islam | – A religion that believes in one God and follows the teachings of Muhammed |
| Sunnah | – The example of how Muhammad lived and how Muslims try to live. |
| Shrine | – A holy place where people go to show respect or pray. |
| Muhammad | – The person who started the religion of Islam; Muslims believe he was the last prophet. |
| Muslims | – People who follow the religion of Islam. |
| Mosque | – A building where Muslims gather to pray. |
| Jihad | – A struggle to do what is right or to defend the Islamic faith. |
| Nomads | – People who don’t stay in one place and move around to find food, water, or land. |
