ICT - Cloud - Scale
Scalability and Elasticity
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Vertical scaling | A company hosting a large database for attendees at an event suddenly takes on a new customer database and needs to process the information more rapidly without any downtime. |
| Scalability | As the start-up gains customers month-over-month, the IT team monitors long-term trends and manually provisions larger databases to plan for sustained future data demands. |
| Horizontal Scaling | If one physical server fails (a "disaster"), the load balancer automatically redirects all traffic to the remaining healthy servers, providing High Availability (no downtime). |
| Elasticity | When a new game patch launches, millions of users connect. The cloud instantly launches thousands of game servers to meet demand and shuts them down when users go to bed, reducing operating costs. |
| Load Balancer | Changing the resources as needed for the given demand. This can be in terms of access to servers, or infrastructure |
