QuestionAnswer
Aorta The largest artery that carries oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle to the body.
Left Ventricle The heart chamber that pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta.
Right Ventricle The chamber that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery.
Left Atrium The chamber that receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs.
Right Atrium The chamber that receives deoxygenated blood from the body.
Coronary Artery Any artery that delivers oxygenated blood to the heart muscle itself.
Apex The pointed, bottom tip of the heart.
Superior Vena Cava Large vein that returns blood to the right atrium from the upper body.
Inferior Vena Cava Large vein that returns blood to the right atrium from the lower body
Pulmonary Artery Vessel carrying deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs.
Pulmonary Veins Vessels carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium.
Cordae Tendinea Heart strings” that anchor valve flaps to papillary muscles
Papillary Muscles Muscles in the ventricles that pull on chordae tendineae to control valve movement
Septum Wall that separates the left and right sides of the heart.
Tricuspid Valve Valve between the right atrium and right ventricle.
Bicuspid/Mitral Valve Valve between the left atrium and left ventricle.
Aortic Semilunar Valve Valve at the base of the aorta that prevents backflow into the left ventricle.
Pulmonary Semilunar Valve Valve at the base of the pulmonary artery that prevents backflow into the right ventricle.
Brachiocephalic Artery First major branch of the aorta supplying the right arm and head
Left Main Coronary Artery Main vessel supplying the left side of the heart.
Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery Branch that supplies the front of the left ventricle.
Circumflex Coronary Artery Branch that supplies the left atrium and side/back of the left ventricle.
Left Posterior Descending Coronary Artery A branch (in some people) supplying the back of the heart.
Right Coronary Artery Artery supplying the right side of the heart and parts of the conduction system.
Posterior DescendingCoronary Artery Artery supplying the back of the ventricles; can branch from RCA or LCA depending on dominance.
