| Question | Answer |
|---|---|
| Aorta | The largest artery that carries oxygen-rich blood from the left ventricle to the body. |
| Left Ventricle | The heart chamber that pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta. |
| Right Ventricle | The chamber that pumps deoxygenated blood to the lungs via the pulmonary artery. |
| Left Atrium | The chamber that receives oxygen-rich blood from the lungs. |
| Right Atrium | The chamber that receives deoxygenated blood from the body. |
| Coronary Artery | Any artery that delivers oxygenated blood to the heart muscle itself. |
| Apex | The pointed, bottom tip of the heart. |
| Superior Vena Cava | Large vein that returns blood to the right atrium from the upper body. |
| Inferior Vena Cava | Large vein that returns blood to the right atrium from the lower body |
| Pulmonary Artery | Vessel carrying deoxygenated blood from the right ventricle to the lungs. |
| Pulmonary Veins | Vessels carrying oxygenated blood from the lungs to the left atrium. |
| Cordae Tendinea | Heart strings” that anchor valve flaps to papillary muscles |
| Papillary Muscles | Muscles in the ventricles that pull on chordae tendineae to control valve movement |
| Septum | Wall that separates the left and right sides of the heart. |
| Tricuspid Valve | Valve between the right atrium and right ventricle. |
| Bicuspid/Mitral Valve | Valve between the left atrium and left ventricle. |
| Aortic Semilunar Valve | Valve at the base of the aorta that prevents backflow into the left ventricle. |
| Pulmonary Semilunar Valve | Valve at the base of the pulmonary artery that prevents backflow into the right ventricle. |
| Brachiocephalic Artery | First major branch of the aorta supplying the right arm and head |
| Left Main Coronary Artery | Main vessel supplying the left side of the heart. |
| Left Anterior Descending Coronary Artery | Branch that supplies the front of the left ventricle. |
| Circumflex Coronary Artery | Branch that supplies the left atrium and side/back of the left ventricle. |
| Left Posterior Descending Coronary Artery | A branch (in some people) supplying the back of the heart. |
| Right Coronary Artery | Artery supplying the right side of the heart and parts of the conduction system. |
| Posterior DescendingCoronary Artery | Artery supplying the back of the ventricles; can branch from RCA or LCA depending on dominance. |
