What is the primary function of the mouth in digestion? Mechanical breakdown of food by chewing and chemical digestion through salivary enzymes like amylase.
What structure connects the pharynx to the stomach? The esophagus.
What is the name of the muscular opening that allows food to enter the stomach from the esophagus? The lower esophageal sphincter (cardiac sphincter).
What is the main function of the stomach? To chemically and mechanically break down food using acid and enzymes, producing chyme.
What are the three regions of the small intestine, in order? Duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
Which accessory organ produces bile? The liver.
What is the primary function of bile? To emulsify fats, making them easier to digest and absorb.
What structure separates the small intestine from the large intestine? The ileocecal valve.
What is the main function of the large intestine? To absorb water and electrolytes and form solid waste (feces).
Which organ produces digestive enzymes that help break down carbohydrates, proteins, and fats? The pancreas.
