the heart and blood

TermDefinition
heart a muscular organ that pumps blood throughout the body
artery a blood vessel that carries oxygen-rich blood away from the heart to the tissues
vein a blood vessel that carries the oxygen-poor blood back to the heart
capillary tiny blood vessels where the exchange of oxygen, nutrients, and waste occurs between blood and tissues
aorta the largest artery in the body, carries oxygenerated blood from the heart to the rest of the body
pulmonary artery the artery that carries oxygen-poor blood from the heart to the lungs for oxygenation
red blood cells cells in the blood that carry oxygen from the lungs to the bodies tissues
white blood cells cells in the blood that help fight infection and provide immunity
platelets small blood components that help in blood clotting to stop bleeding
coronary arteries the arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle itself.
