TermDefinition
Central Nervous System The brain and spinal cord; responsible for processing and intergrating information
Peripheral Nervous System all neural tissue outside the CNS including cranial and spinal nerves.
Autonomic Nervous System Part of the PNS that controls involuntary actions such as heart rate, digestion and gland function
Sympathetic Nervous System Division of the ANS responsible for the flight or fight response
Myelin Sheath Fatty covering that increases the speed of nerve impulse conduction
Baroreceptors Pressure receptors that help regulate blood pressure
Epicardium The outmost layer of the heart wall
Hemoglobin A protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen
Cardiac output the amount of blood pumped by the heart per minute
pituitary gland the master gland that regulates many other endocrine glands
