| sesamoid bones | form inside tendons (patella, kneecap) |
| axial skeleton | the center of the body |
| appendicular skeleton | limbs, arms, legs, pelvis, shoulder girdle |
| diaphysis | the shaft of a long bone |
| epiphysis | the ends of a long bone |
| periosteum | outer covering-contains nerves and blood vessels |
| compact bone | hard, strong outer layer |
| bone marrow | inside cavities, produces blood cells |
