What is the primary function of the small intestine? Nutrient digestion and absorption (most nutrient absorption occurs in the jejunum; bile salts & B12 in the ileum).
What are the three parts of the small intestine? Duodenum, jejunum, ileum.
What organ produces bile and what is its function? The liver; bile emulsifies fats for absorption.
Where is bile stored and concentrated? In the gallbladder.
What are the main functions of the stomach? Mechanical and chemical digestion, secreting acid and enzymes, and beginning protein digestion via pepsin.
What is the role of the pancreas in digestion? Produces digestive enzymes (lipase, amylase, proteases) and bicarbonate to neutralize gastric acid.
What are the major parts of the large intestine? Cecum, ascending colon, transverse colon, descending colon, sigmoid colon, rectum.
What is the main function of the large intestine? Absorption of water and electrolytes, formation and storage of feces.
What is the sphincter between the stomach and duodenum called, and what does it do? The pyloric sphincter; regulates emptying of gastric contents into the duodenum.
What structures increase surface area in the small intestine? Plicae circulares, villi, and microvilli.
