QuestionAnswer
What is the main function of the respiratory system, and how does it help maintain homeostasis in the body? The respiratory system brings oxygen into the body and removes carbon dioxide. By regulating gas exchange, it helps maintain the body’s pH balance and supports cellular respiration, which is essential for producing energy.
How do the structures of the alveoli support efficient gas exchange between oxygen and carbon dioxide? Alveoli have thin walls, a large surface area, and are surrounded by capillaries. These features allow oxygen and carbon dioxide to move easily between the air in the lungs and the blood, making gas exchange fast and efficient.
What role does the diaphragm play in the breathing process, and how does it change during inhalation and exhalation? The diaphragm contracts and moves downward during inhalation, expanding the chest cavity and allowing air to enter the lungs. During exhalation, it relaxes and moves upward, decreasing the chest cavity’s size and pushing air out.
What is the main job of the lymphatic system? Its main job is to return extra fluid to the bloodstream and help the body fight infections.
What are lymph nodes and why are they important? Lymph nodes are small, bean-shaped structures that filter lymph fluid. They trap germs and activate immune cells to fight infection.
How does the lymphatic system help the immune system? It carries immune cells, removes waste, and helps detect and destroy harmful pathogens.
What are the two main types of blood vessels, and what do they do? Arteries carry blood away from the heart, and veins carry blood back to the heart.
Why is oxygen-rich blood important for the body? It provides the oxygen cells need to make energy and function properly.
What is the main role of the endocrine system? It produces hormones that help control body functions like growth, metabolism, and stress response.
What gland is known as the “master gland,” and why? The pituitary gland is called the “master gland” because it controls many other endocrine glands.
How do hormones travel through the body? Hormones move through the bloodstream to reach their target organs or cells.
