QuestionAnswer
What is the primary function of axial muscles? Axial muscles support and protect the head, neck, and trunk. They help maintain posture and assist with breathing and movements like flexing and rotating the trunk (Zimmerman & Snow).
What do appendicular muscles control? They move the upper and lower limbs. These muscles allow actions such as walking, lifting, throwing, and fine motor movement of the hands and feet (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is the main role of neurons? Neurons transmit electrical and chemical signals throughout the body, allowing communication between the brain, spinal cord, and peripheral tissues (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is one important function of glial cells? Glial cells support, protect, and nourish neurons. For example, astrocytes maintain the blood-brain barrier, and Schwann cells form myelin around peripheral nerves (Zimmerman & Snow).
What structures make up the central nervous system (CNS)? The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. It processes information and generates responses (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is the difference between the sympathetic and parasympathetic divisions of the ANS? The sympathetic division prepares the body for “fight or flight,” while the parasympathetic division promotes “rest and digest” activities (Zimmerman & Snow).
What are the five major special senses? Vision, hearing, equilibrium, taste, and smell. These senses rely on specialized receptors that detect specific types of stimuli (Zimmerman & Snow).
How do endocrine glands control body functions? They release hormones into the bloodstream. These hormones regulate metabolism, growth, reproduction, stress responses, and homeostasis (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is the function of the heart’s valves? Valves keep blood flowing in one direction and prevent backflow during each heartbeat. Examples include the mitral, tricuspid, aortic, and pulmonary valves (Zimmerman & Snow).
What is the main function of the lymphatic system and how does it support immunity? The lymphatic system drains excess tissue fluid, transports fats, and houses lymphocytes. It works with the immune system to filter pathogens and mount defense responses (Zimmerman & Snow).
