What is the primary function of the autonomic nervous system (ANS)? To regulate involuntary body functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiration.
Sympathetic Division The “fight or flight” system that increases alertness, heart rate, and energy availability.
What does the parasympathetic nervous system primarily control? Rest and digestion, energy conservation, and returning the body to homeostasis.
Neuron A nerve cell that transmits electrical and chemical signals throughout the body.
Which part of the brain controls balance and coordination? The cerebellum
Action Potential A rapid change in electrical charge that travels along a neuron’s axon.
What structure connects the two hemispheres of the brain? The corpus callosum.
Myelin Sheath Fatty covering around axons that speeds up electrical signal transmission.
What does the endocrine system use to communicate? Hormones released into the bloodstream.
Pituitary Gland The “master gland” that regulates other endocrine glands.
