| Term | Definition |

| Partial pressure | This term is the pressure exerted by any one gas in a mixture of gases or in a liquid. |
| Hemoglobin | This is a quaternary protein made of four different polypeptide chains- two alpha chains and two beta chains. |
| Gastrointestinal tract | This refers only to the stomach and intestines but is sometimes used in reference to the entire alimentary canal. |
| Mucosa | The innermost layer of the GI wall- the layer facing the lumen or open space of the tube. |
| Ascending colon | This lies in a vertical position, on the right side of the abdomen, and extends up to the lower border of the liver. |
| Transverse colon | This passes horizontally across the abdomen, below the liver, the stomach and spleen. Note that this part of the colon is above the small intestine. |
| Ingestion | The process of taking food into mouth, starting it on its journey through the digestive tract. |
| Digestion | A group of processes that break complex nutrients into simpler ones, thus facilitating their absorption. |
| Lymph | is a clear, watery-appearing fluid found in the lymphatic vessels. |
| Interstitial fluid | Fills the spaces between cells, is not the simple fluid it seems to be. Studies show that it is an important and complex part of the ECM. |
