Name the upper 2 chambers of the heart and what it does Atria-RECEIVE blood
Name the lower 2 chambers of the heart and what it does Ventricles-PUMP blood. The RIGHT ventricle pumps blood to the lungs. The LEFT ventricle pumps blood to the body
Blood Vessels carry what? Blood to every cell
What do arteries do? Carry oxygen rich blood AWAY from heart to body
What are arteries made of? smooth muscle to contract and dilate
What do veins do? Carry oxygen poor blood FROM body back to heart.
What do capillaries do? They are microscopic blood vessels that connect arteries to veins. ONLY ONE CELL THICK
How do nutrients and oxygen get INTO body cells? They Diffuse
How does waste and carbon dioxide get OUT of body cells? They Diffuse
What are the four parts of blood? 1.white blood cells 2. Plasma 3. Red blood cells 4. Platelets
What do white blood cells do? What percent of blood are they? They are made in the bone marrow and fight bacteria and viruses. They are less than 1%.
What does plasma do? What percent of blood is it? Plasma is watery and carries nutrients, minerals, oxygen TO cells and carries waste AWAY; It is 52-62%
What do red blood cells do? What percent of blood is it? They are made in the bone marrow and carry OXYGEN to body cells using an iron containing protein called Hemoglobin. They are 38-48%
What do platelets do? What percent of blood is it? They are cell fragments that help in the process of clotting. Less than 1%
How many blood phenotypes are there and what are they? 4 A, B, AB, and O
What is an antigen? It is a sugar based receptor that is attached to the surface of a red blood cell
What is an antibody? It is a protein produced by the body that neutralizes foreign invaders.
