TermDefinition
water cycle The continuous movement of water between the land, ocean and atmospheres.
evaporation When liquid water changes into vapor.
transpiration When plants release water vapor into the air through their leaves.
sublimation When a solid changes directly into a gas without becoming liquid first.
condensation When water vapor in the air cools and changes into tiny droplets.
precipitation Any form of water that falls from the sky, like rain snow sleet or hail.
weather The day to day conditions of the atmosphere.
humidity The amount of water vapor in the air.
relative humidity How much moisture is in the air compared to how much it could hold at that temperature.
dew point The temperature at which air becomes full of moisture and water droplets start to form.
air pressure The force of air pushing down on the Earth's surface.
wind Air that moves from a place with high air pressure to a place with low pressure.
visability How far you can see clearly, usually measured in distance.
Air Mass A large body or air with similar temperatures and humidity.
front The boundary where two different air masses meet.
jet stream A fast, narrow band of air high in the atmosphere that moves weather across the globe.
thunderstorm A storm with thunder, lightening and heavy rain.
lightning A sudden flash of electrical energy in the atmosphere.
thunder The sound caused by lightning heating the air and making it expand rapidly.
hurricanes A large rotating storm that forms over the warm ocean water with very strong winds.
storm surge A rise in sea level caused by a hurricanes winds pushing water toward land.
tornado A rotating column of air that touches the ground forming a spinning funnel shaped cloud.
