| Respiratory System | The body system responsible for gas exchange, bringing oxygen in and removing carbon dioxide |
| Ventilation | The movement of air in and out of the lungs. |
| External Respiration | Gas exchange between the alveoli and pulmonary capillaries. |
| Internal Respiration | Gas exchange between systemic capillaries and body tissue |
| Alveoli | Tiny air sacs in the lungs where oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged. |
| Diffusion | Movement of gases from high concentration to low concentration across the alveolar membrane |
| Diaphragm | Primary muscle of breathing; contracts to allow inhalation. |
| Gas Exchange | Transfer of oxygen and carbon dioxide between blood and alveoli. |
| Surfactant | A substance that reduces surface tension in alveoli and prevents collapse. |
| Bronchi | Large air passages that branch from the trachea into each lung. |
| Trachea | Windpipe that carries air from the throat to the bronchi. |
