StudyStack Set 2

TermDefinition
Axial Muscles Muscles located along the body's central axis (head, neck, and trunk) responsible for movement and support.
Appendicular Muscles Muscles attached to the limbs (arms and legs) responsible for movement and stabilization.
Nervous System Cells Specialized cells (neurons and glial cells) responsible for transmitting electrical signals throughout the body.
Central Nervous System (CNS) The part of the nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord, controlling sensory and motor functions.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) The network of nerves outside the CNS that connects the brain and spinal cord to the rest of the body.
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) A part of the PNS that controls involuntary functions such as heart rate, digestion, and respiratory rate.
Endocrine System A system of glands that secrete hormones into the bloodstream to regulate body processes such as metabolism and growth.
Senses The physiological mechanisms through which organisms detect and respond to external stimuli, including sight, hearing, touch, taste, and smell.
Cardiovascular System A system composed of the heart and blood vessels responsible for transporting oxygen, nutrients, and waste products throughout the body.
Immune System The body's defense system against harmful pathogens, involving cells, tissues, and organs that work together to fight infections.
