QuestionAnswer
Where is the heart located in the body? In the center of the chest (thoracic cavity).
How many sides does the heart have, and what are they? Two sides—right and left.
What two chambers are found on each side of the heart? An atrium (upper chamber) and a ventricle (lower chamber).
What ensures that blood flows in only one direction through the heart? Inlet and outlet valves in each ventricle.
What is the muscular layer of the heart called? The myocardium
Why does the heart need its own supply of oxygen-rich blood? Because it needs oxygen to function properly.
What system supplies oxygen-rich blood to the heart muscle? The cardiovascular circulation (including coronary arteries and veins).
Which vessels return oxygen-depleted blood from the body to the right atrium? The superior vena cava and inferior vena cava.
Which vessels carry oxygen-rich blood from the lungs to the left atrium? The pulmonary veins.
What is the function of the left ventricle? It pumps oxygen-rich blood out to the body through the aorta.
