| Term | Definition |

| Axial Muscles | Muscles that primarily support and move the head and trunk. They are responsible for posture and movement of the torso. |
| Appendicular Muscles | Muscles associated with the limbs that allow for movements like walking, grasping, and lifting. These include muscles in the arms, legs, and pelvic region. |
| Flexion | A movement that decreases the angle between two body parts, such as bending the elbow or knee. |
| Extension | A movement that increases the angle between two body parts, such as straightening the arm or leg. |
| Abduction | A movement away from the midline of the body, such as raising the arm to the side. |
| Neuron | A nerve cell that transmits electrical impulses throughout the body. Neurons are the fundamental units of the nervous system. |
| Glial Cells | Supportive cells in the nervous system that provide insulation, nourishment, and structural support to neurons. |
| Synapse | The junction between two neurons or between a neuron and a target cell, where communication occurs through chemical signals. |
| Central Nervous System (CNS) | Composed of the brain and spinal cord, the CNS processes information and coordinates the activity of the body. |
| Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) | A part of the peripheral nervous system that controls involuntary functions like heart rate, digestion, and respiration. |
