The Autonomic Nervous System and Higher-Order Functions

TermDefinition
Somatic Nervous System (SNS) allows for voluntary control of skeletal muscles
Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) responsible for involuntary control of visceral effectors such as smooth muscle, glands, cardiac muscle, and adipocytes
Preganglionic Nuerons visceral motor neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord: they extend to ganglia
Preganglionic Fibers the axons of preganglionic neurons
The Sympathetic Division flight or fight response, prepares the body to deal with emergenies
The Parasympathetic Division rest and digest after eating a big dinner, decreased metabolic rate, decreased heart rate and blood pressure, increased secretion by salivary and digestive glands, increased motility and blood flow in the digestive tract.
