The Autonomic Nervous System and Higher-Order Functions

| Somatic Nervous System (SNS) | allows for voluntary control of skeletal muscles |
| Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) | responsible for involuntary control of visceral effectors such as smooth muscle, glands, cardiac muscle, and adipocytes |
| Preganglionic Nuerons | visceral motor neurons in the brainstem and spinal cord: they extend to ganglia |
| Preganglionic Fibers | the axons of preganglionic neurons |
| The Sympathetic Division | flight or fight response, prepares the body to deal with emergenies |
| The Parasympathetic Division | rest and digest after eating a big dinner, decreased metabolic rate, decreased heart rate and blood pressure, increased secretion by salivary and digestive glands, increased motility and blood flow in the digestive tract. |
