What are the major endocrine glands in the body? Pituitary, thyroid, parathyroids, adrenal glands, pancreas, pineal gland, and thymus.
What are the two main types of bone formation? Intramembranous ossification (flat bones) and endochondral ossification (most bones formed from cartilage).
Where is the pituitary gland located, and what bone structure protects it? It sits in the sella turcica of the sphenoid bone.
What is the function of intervertebral discs? They cushion vertebrae, absorb shock, and allow flexibility of the spinal column.
What are the two organs that make up the central nervous system? The brain and the spinal cord.
What are the three protective meninges surrounding the CNS? Dura mater, arachnoid mater, and pia mater.
What are the major chambers of the heart? Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle.
What is the largest artery in the body, and what structure does it emerge from? The aorta; it emerges from the left ventricle.
What is the functional unit of compact bone, and what does it contain? The osteon; it contains a central canal, lamellae, lacunae, osteocytes, and canaliculi.
What organs make up the alimentary canal in order? Mouth → pharynx → esophagus → stomach → small intestine → large intestine → rectum → anus.
What are the three regions of the small intestine? Duodenum, jejunum, and ileum.
