Alveoli Microscopic sacs where actual gas exchange occurs.
Major Respiratory Structures Nasal cavity, pharynx, larynx, trachea, bronchi, lungs, diaphragm.
Function of Immune System Destroys or neutralizes pathogens that cause disease.
Function of Lymphatic System Returns excess fluid to bloodstream and filters pathogens.
Major Lymphatic Structures Lymph nodes, spleen, thymus, lymph vessels, tonsils.
Function of Cardiovascular System Transports oxygen, nutrients, and hormones; removes waste products.
Heart Chambers Right atrium, right ventricle, left atrium, left ventricle.
Major Heart Vessels Aorta, pulmonary arteries, pulmonary veins, vena cava.
Central Nervous System (CNS) Brain and spinal cord; processes and integrates information.
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS) Nerves outside CNS; carries signals between CNS and body.
Neuron Components Dendrites, soma (cell body), axon, myelin sheath, synapse.
Endocrine System Function Releases hormones that regulate body functions such as growth, metabolism, and stress.
Major Endocrine Glands Pituitary, thyroid, adrenal glands, pancreas, ovaries/testes.
Skeletal System Function Provides support, protects organs, enables movement with muscles.
Major Skeletal Divisions Axial skeleton (skull, vertebrae, ribs) and appendicular skeleton (limbs, girdles).
