Nervous System

QuestionAnswer
What is the primary role of the nervous system? To detect changes (stimuli), evaluate information, and respond by initiating changes in muscles or glands.
What do feedback loops in the nervous system help maintain? Homeostatic balance necessary for survival.
How can the nervous system be subdivided for easier understanding? By structure, direction of information flow, or control of effectors.
What are the two main structural divisions of the nervous system? Central nervous system (CNS) and peripheral nervous system (PNS).
Which division carries information toward the CNS? The afferent division.
Which division carries information away from the CNS to effectors? The efferent division.
What are the two subdivisions of the efferent division? Autonomic nervous system and somatic nervous system.
Which efferent subdivision controls voluntary skeletal muscle movements? Somatic nervous system.
Which efferent subdivision regulates involuntary functions like heart rate and digestion? Autonomic nervous system.
What are the two main types of nervous system cells? Neurons and glial cells.
