What are the four pairs of muscles that act together to compress the abdominal contents? 1. the rectus abdominis, 2. the external oblique, 3. the internal oblique, 4. the transverse abdominis
what are the components of the central nervous system? The brain, which is the main control canter, and the spinal cord which is a conduit for nerve signals.
What are the components to the peripheral nervous system? The somatic nervous system controls voluntary muscle movements and receives information from the skin joints and skeletal muscles The autonomic nervous system manages involuntary functions like heart rate, breathing and digestion.
What are the two subdivisions if the autonomic nervous system? the sympathetic nervous system prepares the body for "fight or flight" and the parasympathetic nervous system promotes the "rest and digest" state
How many pairs of spinal nerves are there and how are they categorized? there are 31. 8 cervical (C1-C8) , 12 thoracic (T1-T12), 5 lumbar (L1-L5), 5 sacral (S1-S5), 1 coccygeal
What hormones does the thyroid secrete? the three main hormones are, thyroxine (T4), triiodothyronine (T3), and calcitonin.
What are the functions of the thyroid hormones? T3 and T4 regulate metabolism and calcitonin helps to control blood calcium levels.
How do vaccines work? they prepare the body for pathogen exposure without causing illness first.
What are the four chambers of the heart? The right atria, the left atria, the right ventricle, and the left ventricle
What is an antigen? Any substance that creates an immune response in the body.
what is the function of the alveoli? the alveoli function to exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide across the alveolar pulmonary capillary membrane.
