| angiosclerosis | hardening of a blood vessel |
| antiarrhythmic | drug that opposes an irregular heartbeat |
| anticoagulant | drug that opposes the coagulation of blood |
| antihypertensive | drug that opposes high blood pressure |
| aortalgia | pain in the aorta |
| aortic aneurysm | bulging or swelling of the aorta |
| atrial fibrillation | quivering or spontaneous contraction of muscle fibers in the heart’s atrium |
| bradycardia | slow heartbeat |
| embolism | blockage in a blood vessel caused by an embolus |
| embolus | mass of matter present in the blood |
| endocarditis | inflammation of the tissue lining the inside of the heart |
| endocardium | tissue lining the inside of the heart |
| epicardium | tissue lining the outside of the heart |
| hypertrophic | heart muscle becomes enlarged and blocks blood flow |
| valvectomy | surgical removal of a heart valve |
| valvulitis | inflammation of a heart valve |
| valvuloplasty | surgical reconstruction of a heart valve |
| varicose veins | enlarged, dilated vein toward the surface of the skin |
| vasculitis | inflammation of blood vessels |
| vasoconstrictor | drug that constricts or narrows the diameter of a blood vessel |
| vasodilator | drug that causes the relaxation or expansion of a blood vessel |
| vasopressor | drug that constricts or narrows the diameter of a blood vessel |
| vasospasm | involuntary contraction of a blood vessel |
| vena cava inferior | portion of the vena cava that gathers blood from the lower portion of the body |
| hypercarbia | excessive carbon dioxide |
| hyperpnea | heavy breathing |
| hyperventilation | overbreathing; condition of having too much air flowing into and out of the lungs |
| hypocarbia | insufficient carbon dioxide |
| hypopnea | shallow breathing |
| hypoventilation | underbreathing; condition of having too little air flowing into and out of the lungs; leads to hypercapnia |
| hypoxemia | insufficient oxygen in the blood |

| laryngectomy | removal of the larynx |
| Laryngitis | inflammation of the larynx |
| laryngotracheobronchitis | inflammation of the larynx, trachea, and bronchi |
| lobectomy | removal of a lobe |
| mesothelioma | a cancerous tumor of the mesothelium cells lining the lungs |
| mucolytic | a drug that aids in the breakdown of mucus. |
| nebulizer | a machine that administers respiratory medication by creating a "cloud" or mist that is inhaled by the patient |
| oximetry | a procedure to measure oxygen levels |
| orthopnea | able to breathe only in an upright position |
| rhinorrhea | runny nose |
| sinusitis | inflammation of the sinus |
| sleep apnea | a condition where the patient ceases to breathe while asleep |
| spirometry | a procedure to measure breathing |
| sputum | mucus discharged from the lungs by coughing |
| tachypnea | rapid breathing |
| thoracalgia | chest pain |
| thoracocentesis | puncture of the chest |
| tonsillectomy | removal of the tonsils |

| ascites | retention of fluid in the peritoneum |
| bariatrics | branch of medicine dealing with weight issues |

| choleangiogastrostomy | creation of an opening betweenthe bile vessel (ducts) and the stomach |
