QuestionAnswer
What are the primary organs of the digestive system? Mouth, pharynx, esophagus, stomach, small intestine, large intestine, rectum, anus.
What is the main function of the digestive system? Mechanical and chemical breakdown of food, absorption of nutrients, elimination of waste.
What are accessory digestive organs? Teeth, tongue, salivary glands, liver, gallbladder, pancreas.
What enzyme does saliva contain and what does it digest? Amylase; begins carbohydrate digestion.
What is peristalsis? Rhythmic muscular contractions that move food through the GI tract.
What cells in the stomach produce hydrochloric acid? Parietal cells.
What does the small intestine primarily do? Absorbs nutrients through villi and microvilli.
What is the main function of the large intestine? Absorption of water and electrolytes; formation of feces.
What organ produces bile? Liver
What organ stores bile? Gall bladder
