Metals & Alloys
Metals & Alloys - Flashcards
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Ferrous Metals | Metals that contain iron (e.g., mild steel, cast iron). |
| Non-Ferrous Metals | Metals that do not contain iron (e.g., aluminium, copper). |
| Alloy | A mixture of two or more metals, or metals and non-metals. |
| Steel | An alloy of iron and carbon, often with added elements. |
| Stainless Steel | An alloy of steel with chromium to improve corrosion resistance. |
| Cast Iron | A ferrous alloy high in carbon, strong but brittle. |
| Low-carbon steel, ductile and widely used in manufacturing. | |
| Aluminium | Lightweight, corrosion-resistant, non-ferrous metal. |
| Copper | Non-ferrous metal with excellent electrical conductivity. |
| Brass | Alloy of copper and zinc. |
| Bronze | Alloy of copper and tin. |
| Ductility | Ability to be drawn into a wire. |
| Malleability | Ability to be shaped or hammered without cracking. |
| Hardness | Resistance to wear or scratching. |
| Toughness | Ability to absorb energy before fracturing. |
| Annealing | Heat treatment that softens metal and improves ductility. |
| Quenching | Rapid cooling to harden metal. |
| Tempering | Heat treatment to reduce brittleness after quenching. |
| Hardening | Heating and quenching to increase hardness. |
| Work Hardening | Strengthening a metal through plastic deformation. |
| Corrosion | Deterioration of metal due to chemical reactions (e.g., rust). |
