Advanced Placement English Vocabulary Terms

What is allegory? The device of using character and/or story elements symbolically to represent an abstraction.
Give an example of alliteration. she sells sea shells.
Define allusion. a direct or indirect reference to something that is commonly known.
What is ambiguity? The multiple meanings either intentional or unintentional, of a word, phrase, sentence, or passage.
Define analogy. A similarity or comparison of two different things.
Give examples of antecedent? it, she, we, or they
Define antecedent. the word, phrase, or clause referred to by a pronoun.
What is the defenition of antithesis? the opposition or contrast of ideas;the direct opposite.
What is caricature? a verbal description, to exaggerate for comic effect, a person's distinctive physical features or other charecteristics.
Define conceit. an extended metaphor or surprising analogy between seemingly dissimilar objects.
What is the difference between connotation and denotation? Connotation is the implied, suggested meaning of a word while denotation is the strict, literal, dictionary deffinition of a word.
What is an extended metaphor? a metaphor developed at great length occuring fre
What is the difference between genre and prose? Genre is the major category of a literary work while prose is the major division of genre such as fiction and non-fiction.
what is the opposite of hyperbole? an understatement.
What is the difference between synecedoche and metonymy? The difference between synecdoche and metonymy is that in metonymy the word you use is related or linked to the concept you are really talking about, but isn’t actually a part of it. Synecedoche is taking a part of the concept and calling it that.
Define oxymoron and give two examples. a phrase of two words where the two words disagree with one another to suggest a paradox. - Same Difference - Definite Maybe
Define and give an example of syllogism. form of deductive reasoning consisting of a major premise, a minor premise, and a conclusion - all humans are mortal - i am a human - therefore, i am mortal.
