Week 13: Assignment

Respiratory System

TermDefinition
Alveoli Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen enters the bloodstream, and carbon dioxide leaves.
Bronchi Large airway branches that carry air from the trachea into each lung.
Bronchioles Smaller branches of the bronchi that deliver air to the alveoli.
Diaphragm A dome-shaped muscle beneath the lungs that controls breathing. It contracts during inhalation and relaxes during exhalation.
Trachea Also known as the windpipe, it is the main airway that carries air from the throat to the lungs.
Larynx The voice box. It produces sound and protects the lower airway by preventing food from entering the trachea.
Pleura A double-layered membrane that surrounds each lung and reduces friction during breathing.
Pulmonary Ventilation The process of moving air in and out of the lungs—commonly called breathing.
Oxygenation The process where oxygen is added to the blood as it passes through the alveoli.
Gas Exchange The movement of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of the blood at the alveolar level.
