Week 13: Assignment
Respiratory System
| Term | Definition |
|---|---|
| Alveoli | Tiny air sacs in the lungs where gas exchange occurs. Oxygen enters the bloodstream, and carbon dioxide leaves. |
| Bronchi | Large airway branches that carry air from the trachea into each lung. |
| Bronchioles | Smaller branches of the bronchi that deliver air to the alveoli. |
| Diaphragm | A dome-shaped muscle beneath the lungs that controls breathing. It contracts during inhalation and relaxes during exhalation. |
| Trachea | Also known as the windpipe, it is the main airway that carries air from the throat to the lungs. |
| Larynx | The voice box. It produces sound and protects the lower airway by preventing food from entering the trachea. |
| Pleura | A double-layered membrane that surrounds each lung and reduces friction during breathing. |
| Pulmonary Ventilation | The process of moving air in and out of the lungs—commonly called breathing. |
| Oxygenation | The process where oxygen is added to the blood as it passes through the alveoli. |
| Gas Exchange | The movement of oxygen into the blood and carbon dioxide out of the blood at the alveolar level. |
