Nervous System

TermDefinition
Nervous system (3 functions/role in the body) 1. Receives and responds to information from inside and outside of the body 2. Regulates body functions through stimulus and response 3. Maintains homeostasis
Major organs Brain, spinal cord, and nerves
Central Nervous System (CNS): 1. Brain: control center of the body 2. Spinal cord: links brain with the body nerves, controls reflexes
Peripheral Nervous System (PNS): All nerves branching from CNS to body
The nervous system has two parts which are... 1. Central Nervous System (CNS) 2. Peripheral Nervous System (PNS)
Definition of a neuron A cell that carries impulse information
3 parts of a neuron 1. Dendrites 2. Cell body 3. Axon
Dendrite Delivers impulse to cell body
Cell body Contains nucleus and organelles
Axon Carries impulse away from the cell body
Synapse A space between nerve cells
Synapse>axon>dendrites>next cell How chemical messages are delivered
The five senses 1. Vision 2. Hearing 3. Taste 4. Smell 5. Touch
Vision Light stimulates rods (dim light) and cones (colors) and sends impulse to brain
Hearing The outer ear gathers sound waves that vibrate tiny bones and fluid which sends the impulse to the brain
Taste Molecules in air stimulate nerve cells on the tongue (taste buds)
Smell Molecules in air stimulate nerve cells in nasal passages (ol factory cells)
Touch Reseptors found in organs and skin detect changes in pressure, pain, and temperature

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
