Respiratory System

TermDefinition
What is the function of the Respiratory System? Exchange oxygen and carbon dioxide with the external environment and your internal environment
Purpose of nose and mouth Passageway into the respiratory system that helps WARM air
Pharynx (Throat) Transports air, food, and water and includes part of the trachea and esophagus
Larynx (Voice box) Vocal chords are stretched across larynx opening and contracts/relax to make sounds
Trachea (Wind pipe) Carries air from the larynx to the lungs. Covered in cartilaginous rings for protection
Bronchi/Bronchial tubes Two tubes split off from trachea-one tube goes to each lung. Each tube splits into tiny tubes called bronchioles
Alveoli (Air sacs) Tiny sacks in lungs are surrounded by capillaries exchange gases (oxygen) enters blood stream and carbon dioxide exits
Respiration (definition) When the body obtains and uses oxygen and removes carbon dioxide and water as waste.
Two parts of respiration 1. Inhale: diaphragm muscle contracts, moving down and causing the lungs to expand 2. Exhale: diaphragm relaxes, air moves out through the mouth automatically.
What is cellular respiration? Chemical reaction that converts glucose from food into ATP (energy) in the presence of oxygen.
