TermDefinition
Epidermis The outermost layer of the skin
Dermis The thicker, deeper layer of skin located beneath the epidermis. It contains blood vessels, nerves, hair follicles, and glands.
Keratin A strong, waterproof protein found in the epidermis, hair, and nails. Keratin helps protect the body from chemicals, heat, and physical damage.
Osteoblast A bone-forming cell responsible for making new bone matrix and helping bones grow and repair. Osteoblasts eventually become osteocytes.
Skeletal muscle A type of muscle tissue attached to bones that allows voluntary movement (movements you control). It has a striated appearance and works with the nervous system to create motion.
Peripheral nervous system (PNS) All the nerves outside the brain and spinal cord. The PNS carries sensory information to the CNS and sends motor commands from the CNS to muscles and glands.
Cerebrum The largest part of the brain, responsible for thinking, memory, emotion, reasoning, voluntary movement, and interpreting sensory information.
Sensory receptor A specialized cell or nerve ending that detects stimuli (like touch, light, pain, temperature, or chemicals) and sends that information to the nervous system.
Endocrine gland A gland that produces and secretes hormones directly into the bloodstream (no ducts). Examples include the thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands
insulin A hormone produced by the beta cells of the pancreas that helps lower blood glucose by allowing sugar to enter cells for energy or storage.
Hormone A chemical messenger made by an endocrine gland and released into the bloodstream.
Mechanoreceptor A type of sensory receptor that detects physical changes, such as pressure, touch, stretch, vibration, or sound waves.
Lens A transparent, flexible structure in the eye that focuses light onto the retina.
Melanocytes Specialized cells in the epidermis that produce melanin, the pigment responsible for skin, eye, and hair color.
Hair follicle A tubelike structure in the skin that anchors and produces each hair.
