What is the primary function of the small intestine? Absorption of nutrients through villi and microvilli.
What is peristalsis? Rhythmic contractions that move food through the digestive tract.
Which organ produces bile? The liver.
What hormone stimulates the gallbladder to contract? Cholecystokinin (CCK).
What type of epithelium lines the esophagus? Stratified squamous epithelium.
Which enzyme begins carbohydrate digestion? Salivary amylase.
What is the function of the large intestine? Absorption of water and electrolyte balance.
What are Kupffer cells? Liver macrophages that remove bacteria and toxins from blood.
What structure prevents food from entering the nasal cavity during swallowing? The uvula.
What is the function of the pancreas in digestion? Produces enzymes and bicarbonate to neutralize stomach acid.
What are the three sections of the small intestine? Duodenum, jejunum, ileum.
What is deglutition? The process of swallowing.
