Describe the overall structure of a typical lymph node. Fibrous capsule surrounding a maze of sinuses, each with lymphoid tissue nodule suspended by reticular fibers
Where are lymph nodes usually found? Neck (cervical lymph), Armpits (axillary lymph), Groin (inguinal lymph), Under the jaw (Submandibular and submental), Inside the abdomen (mesenteric lymph), Inside the chest (mediastinal lymph), Behind the knees (popliteal lymph)
What functions are carried out by lymph nodes? Filtration of lymph before it enters bloodstream Mechanical filtration: removing particles Biological filtration: cells destroy and remove particles
What major role does the thymus play in immunity? Hematopoiesis—site of T-lymphocyte (T-cell) development Hormone production—thymosin regulates T-cell development
What are Lymphatic capillaries? Collect tissue fluid (forming lymph) Transport lymph to larger lymphatic vessels
What are Lymphatic ducts? Collect lymph from network of lymphatic vessels and drain it into the blood circulation.
What are Lymph nodes? Filtration of lymph before it enters bloodstream Mechanical filtration: removing particles Biological filtration: cells destroy and remove particles
What are Lymphatic vessels? Collect fluids draining from tissues of the body (lymph) and return it to the blood circulation
What are the main functions of the spleen? Hematopoiesis (WBCs) Immunity Filtration of blood Tissue repair Destruction of old RBCs, platelets Blood reservoir.
Where are the major tonsils located? What is their role? Palatine (back of throat), Pharyngeal (Adenoid, behind throat), Lingua l( base of tongue). They trap and filter bacteria/viruses entering through the mouth and nose as a first line of immune defense.
