TermDefinition
Central nervous system (CNS) Consisting of the brain and spinal cord, the CNS integrates incoming pieces of sensory information, evaluates the information, and initiates an out-going response.
Peripheral nervous system (PNS) Consists of the nerve tissues that lie in the periphery, or “outer regions,” of the nervous system.
Astrocytes Webs of astrocyte “feet” attach to the brain’s blood capillaries, helping to form the blood-brain barrier (BBB).
Thalamus Crude sensations, coordination of sensory information relayed to cerebrum; involved in emotional response to sensory information; involved in arousal; general processing of information to/from cerebrum
Hypothalamus Integration/coordination of many autonomic reflexes, hormonal functions; involved in arousal, appetite, thermoregulation
Cerebellum Coordinates many functions of cerebrum, including planning and control of skilled movements, posture, balance, coordination of sensory information relating to body position and movement
Cerebrum Complex processing of sensory and motor information; complex integrative functions
Spinal nerves Only seven cervical vertebrae, there are eight cervical nerve pairs (C1 through C8), twelve thoracic nerve pairs (T1 through T12), five lumbar nerve pairs (L1 through L5), five sacral nerve pairs (S1 through S5), and one coccygeal pair of spinal nerves. T
Three distinct layers of tissue make up the heart wall: The epicardium, myocardium, and endocardium.
Four structures make up the core of the electrical conduction system of the heart: Sinoatrial (SA) node -Atrioventricular (AV) node - Atrioventricular (AV) bundle (bundle of His)- Subendocardial branches (Purkinje fibers)
Cardiac output (CO) is the amount of blood that flows out of a ventricle of the heart per unit of time.
Complement A group of proteins that, when activated, work together to destroy foreign cells.
Upper respiratory tract is composed of the nose, nasopharynx, oropharynx, laryngopharynx, and larynx.
Lower respiratory tract, consists of the trachea, all segments of the bronchial tree, and the lungs.
The epiglottis small leaf-shaped cartilage that projects upward behind the tongue and hyoid bone. It is attached below to the thyroid cartilage, its free superior border can flex to move up and down during swallowing to prevent food or liquids from entering the trachea
