| The small intestine consists of three divisions: | the duodenum, the jejunum, and the ileum. |
| The colon is divided into the following portions: | ascending, trans-verse, descending, and sigmoid |
| Small intestine | The presence of villi and microvilli in-creases the surface area, thus making this organ the main site of digestion and absorption |
| Liver | consists of two lobes separated by the falciform ligament The left lobe and the right lobe make up the remainder. |
| Mesentery | A large, fanlike serous fold that connects the GI tract to the abdominal wall. Blood vessels and nerves travel through this to reach the GI tract throughout most of its length. |
| Uvula | Suspended from the midpoint of the posterior border of the arch |
| Cementum | hard, mineralized tissue similar to bone around tooth roots |
| The intrinsic muscles of the tongue have | both their origin and their insertion in the tongue itself. |
| Extrinsic tongue muscles are | those that insert into the tongue but have their origin on some other structure, such as the hyoid bone or one of the bones of the skull. |
